In an environment of record-low interest rates, profitability took a back seat to growth as capital was cheap and abundant before the pandemic. Businesses were encouraged to borrow aggressively, scale their headcount exponentially, and prioritize rapid product development over long-term sustainability to survive.
At that point, the ability to grow determined how well a company was doing overall. But the Covid pandemic served as a harsh reality check. As the global economy shifted and borrowing costs soared, the dangers of prioritizing growth over fundamentals became apparent.
