A Saint Mary’s College rugby player died Friday during a training run in Moraga, the team announced in a social media post Saturday.
Sophomore Dominic Peterson died after experiencing a medical emergency on a public jogging path while running with his teammates, according to the announcement from the private East Bay liberal arts college. Details of the medical incident were not shared.

“This is heartbreaking for our community and our deepest sympathies are with his family and loved ones,” the post read. “Dominic’s smile was contagious and one that would brighten a room when he entered. He always gave 100% effort and encouraged those around him to do the same.”
Fire Chief Jeff Isaacs with the Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District confirmed Saturday the district responded to the emergency, but did not comment further on the incident.
The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team also posted a dedication on social media Saturday, calling the incident an “unimaginable loss.”
“In times like these, we are reminded that St. Mary’s is more than a college, more than a team and more than a community,” the basketball team shared. “We are a family. When one of us hurts, we all hurt. And when one of our own needs support, we stand together.”
