Tennessee’s victory against Furman football in 1942
No. 18 Tennessee will host Furman (1-0) on Saturday to open its 2026 football season.
Kickoff between the Vols and Paladins is slated for 3:30 p.m. EDT at Neyland Stadium. The contest can be streamed on SEC Network+.

Saturday’s game will mark the third meeting between the two schools in the all-time series, dating to 1941. Tennessee has a 2-0 record in its previous games against Furman.
Tennessee defeated the Paladins, 52-7, on Oct. 24, 1942 at Shields-Watkins Field.
Three of the four former Vols to have their number retired by Tennessee after being killed in World War II played in the contest.
ClydeFuson scored a touchdown and totaled 65 rushing yards on 11 attempts. His jersey number (62) was retired in 2006 during a ceremony in Tennessee’s, 31-30, victory over Air Force at Neyland Stadium.
Bill Nowling (No. 32) and RudyKlarer (No 49) also had their jersey numbers retired on Sept. 9, 2006, and played in the 1942 game versus Furman. Wilis Tucker, who played for the Vols from 1939-40, had his jersey number (61) retired during the ceremony.
